The Artists
The Old Reed Bed currently has three resident ceramic artists.
Jean Lowe trained in Ceramics at Goldsmiths College, London and went on to share studio space with Kate Malone at Balls Pond Studios in Hackney. Now living on the Medway Estuary, her work is inspired by pebbles, stones and the old timbers of wrecked boats found on the shore line. She is best known for her hand-coiled ceramic 'pebbles', 'rock pools', 'creamed oyster shells' and 'standing stones'. Jean's work is fired to stoneware temperatures and is frost-resistant.

Originally trained in Fine Art and English at Exeter University, Alison recently completed a two year HE Diploma in Fine and Applied Art Ceramics at London’s City Lit / London Metropolitan University. Her work - sculptural objects and non-functional vessels - attests to a fascination with discarded and found items with a patina of age and wear. Inspiration is drawn from fine art, poetry and fiction as well as fairy tales, nursery rhymes and song lyrics. Ceramic and found materials are often combined to add visual and tactile interest and to emphasise the implied narrative in each piece or grouping.

Pam Dodds studied Ceramics at Kent Institute of Art and Design, Rochester. Most of her pieces are thrown in porcelain on the wheel before being carved or torn. The formal quality of her work is emphasised by contrasting, monochromatic inner and outer surfaces decorated with a simple transparent glaze or black slip.
